Web Templates Offer to Blog Readers Only
To thank you for your continual support in reading our BasicBlog posts over the last eight months, we'd like to offer you, our BasicBlog Readers, a special web template discount.
This special offer will not be publicly announced anywhere but within our blog. So it is a private promotional offer just for YOU. Please note that this offer cannot be combined with any other promotional offer, discount voucher, sales commission, etc. All 8+ templates and/or graphics packages will need to be purchased on one invoice to qualify for this offer.
It truly does pay to subscribe to our RSS feed or visit our BasicBlog on a regular basis. Enjoy!
The reason I like these templates is because they have an unlimited amount of website theme possibilities. A web page template with a globe or the planet earth could be used on websites for just about anything including (but not limited to) corporate websites, technology web sites, web hosting services, small to medium sized businesses, software companies, mom and pop shops, informational and brochure sites, etc.
Think of it this way: If your website is on the "web" which all of them are, then it is a globally accessible site. If for example you sell baby shower party favors, using a globe with a baby would not be inappropriate. Why? Because your company's website sells to everyone all over the world!
The great news is that BasicTemplates.com offers over 70 web page template designs that encompasses a global theme. Visit my favorite pre-designed template category >>> "Corporate & Global Web Templates".

What is a Website Template?
There is a great deal of confusion these days regarding the definition of a website template. As with any type of "template" the concept is to give you a jumpstart on your project by providing you with a pre-designed element that will:
1) save you time
2) help you avoid unnecessary headaches
3) save you money
Unfortunately, the majority of website templates available online today do not provide any of the attributes noted above. Why not?
There are a number of reasons but first let me ask you, "How well do you know your website visitors?"
By this I mean:
1) Where do they come from?
2) What are they looking for on your website?
3) What operating systems and browsers are they using when they visit your website?
4) Are they using a high speed internet service to access your website?
5) What are their interests, occupations, demographics, age, etc.?
The answers to #1 thru #4 can be found in your web server stats logs. If your hosting company does not provide stats, ask them about it or find a new hosting company.
Knowing who your visitors are, what they want and who sent them is *critical*.
Having an effective and functional website using a website template designed correctly for viewing on the web by those visitors who hit your website is just as critical.
Think of it this way. If I had a website that sold tickets for single-engine airplane rides and most of my traffic was coming from Google by people searching for "commercial airline tickets" my traffic is not targeted, and I make very few sales from my efforts regardless of how much time and money I spent developing my website.
Let's imagine that I know my traffic is highly targeted but most of my website visitors are using dialup and old browsers. My website was designed using a template that has extremely heavy, unnecessary graphics and I have photos of my single-engine airplanes, happy customers sitting in the airplanes prior to takeoff, etc. on my site. I also require that my visitors have a Flash plugin installed on their system.
UhOh! No wonder those folks that are hitting my website don't stay long. Do you know where they are going? They are going to your competitor's website because his website takes less than 15 seconds to load and does not require the installation of any third-party plugin to view it! OUCH!
Incidentally, the answer to #5 above can be only obtained by communicating with your website visitors in some manner. However, if they do not stay on your site long enough, you will never find out the answers to #5.

Computers Website Templates
Since I asked everyone else to post their favorite Web Template category, I'm doing the same. Naturally, my favorite would be those templates relating to what else ... "Computers"! :)
If you want to see a list of all of our designs suitable for websites involving computers, such as computer services, computer repair, computer sales, computer training, Internet Service Providers, web hosting services, etc., visit our "High Tech Web Templates" collection which now consists of over 40 web design choices for your website.
Nearly all of the web designers I know absolutely love everything about computers, the Internet and software or hardware technology. We just cannot get enough of it no matter how much our brains absorb. The only thing we dislike about computers is when they hiccup for no apparent reason and without any forewarning. I don't think we are alone in that pet peave.

Cat Website Templates
Out of fairness to our cats and all the other cats in the world, I cannot go without mentioning our Cat Web Templates.
The photo you see here is the youngest feline addition to our family, LC. He loves to do his computer work everyday which is watching the cursor on the computer monitors. LC is over two years old and he weighs nearly 20 pounds. He is a little overweight but most of him is all feline. He was always very big for his age. In fact, when he first appeared on our doorstep, we thought he was between 5-6 months old. It turned out he was only 3 months old. The vet told us then that we had a kangaroo (not a cat) on our hands and she was right.
In case you are wondering, LC had a web template designed in his honor too Cat Template, Product ID: B0831T.
You can also see LC's Blue Russian brother, Tristan, Blue Russian Cat Web Template, Product ID: B0832T and his part-Persian sister, Ann, Persian Cat Web Template, Product ID: B0833T, through the website templates designed in their honor.

Dog Website Templates
BasicRic asked us to post a little something about our favorite web template category. Since my family just celebrated our puppy's 1st birthday, the dog website templates were on my mind. Our little Molly is no longer a puppy though. She was one year old yesterday which is 15 years old in canine years.
It is hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since she was born as it seems only yesterday that I designed a web template in her honor, HTML-CSS Template B0834T, when we first brought her into our family.
The two photos you see here are from her birthday party last night and her first experience eating anything with sugar. I think she liked it; at least her nose liked the pink icing. ;-)

Website Templates: Fat or Phat
Your new PHAT web template as colorful and pleasing to the eye as it may seem, could actually hurt your site when you discover it is FAT rather than PHAT.
Dozens of poor folks contact us on a regular basis every month asking if we can cut the FAT from a template they purchased elsewhere. They tell us that since they started using this colorful design, their websites' traffic has dropped and their sales drastically took a plunge. What happened? Wasn't it suppose to "attract" more visitors to their site? After all, it sure attracted them to buy it!
I wish I had one dollar for every one of these folks who have contacted us over the 10+ years we have been designing "effective" templates. I sure wouldn't have to work quite as hard and it would be quite a monetary bonus that could send my family on a really nice vacation "every" year.
If you fell into this trap, take heart. You are not alone.

Pure CSS Table-Free Layouts
Should you Use CSS-P (Table-Less Layouts) on Your Web Site?
Pure CSS layouts (also referred to as CSS-P) are cascading style sheets using exact positioning instead of HTML tables. Just like the many controversial topics among designers over the years (ie. MIE vs NS, Mac vs Windows, safe colors vs millions of color choices, flash vs non-flash, etc.), the topic of pure CSS layouts is the hot debate of the time.
In 2003 we published an article about this type of layout, and we continue to stand behind our opinion. A pure CSS layout is still NOT the best option for every website. It is coming however and you should brush up on your CSS skills. But the web as a diversified whole is simply not ready for it yet. Why?
Read our 2003 article to find out who should avoid using Pure CSS. You may also be surprised to learn who isn't using it!

External CSS Cascading Style Sheets
"What is External CSS? Why should you use it in your web design projects?"
This is a common question that we are asked because we developed our website templates using "external" cascading style sheets. CSS is not new; it has been around longer than most people have had internet access. CSS has evolved tremendously over the past years and it is one of the biggest discussions among web designers today.
One important factor is knowing the different types of CSS and how or when to use each. The majority of websites online today should use "external" stylesheets rather than internal or inline. Many template designers state that they use CSS in their designs, but are they using it correctly? 95% of them are not. If you purchased a web template and it does not contain 99.999% external CSS, then you can be sure that you are dealing with a "graphic template designer" and NOT a "web template designer". This is especially true if the template you purchased allows for little room for actual "content" because it contains excessive, heavy graphics that have no real purpose. Or the navigational structure of the design is so extremely non-traditional, that it would take your sites' visitors far too long to find the information they came to your website to find.
Web templates are defined as exactly what it says: "WEB". I don't see the word "GRAPHICS" in the phrase "World Wide Web", do you? ;) If the concept of the Internet was to visit websites developed mainly with graphics, then I'd imagine the Internet developer gods would have called it the "World Wide Graphics" ... WWG (for short).
What we have found is most web template designers who state that they use CSS are not using EXTERNAL CSS at all, very little, inaccurately, or they are using a combination of external, internal, and inline CSS. The worst of the worst website template designers are using all three CSS types with redundant HTML tags which the CSS was suppose to replace. I'd give them an "E" for effort, but they seriously need to learn CSS before causing their (now ex-)customers anymore headaches.
On a regular basis our sales office receives inquiries from unhappy customers who bought a template elsewhere and plead with us to "FIX IT --- PLEEEASE!". We do our best when we can and try not to cause these poor folks who have already been scammed anymore grief by charging them an outrageous rework price. Most often their best option is to purchase one of our HTML-CSS Templates instead.
"I've just listened to the recorded message on the ordering page and really like it. Is it something you sell the format to or do for other websites? I don't know how to make a recording to put on websites, but I'll bet it would be something your customers would like to do!" - Barbara K.
"Thank you for the kudos, Barbara. We do not offer audio presentations, I'm sorry. :( But as you mentioned, using audio on your website is a great way to promote your services, and to learn more about it, you can go to the URL below:
Like all of our websites' content, articles and tutorials, the script was written by our very talented web template designers. Then voice recorded by a professional actress and actor. If the voices sound familiar to you, it is because these professionals have done many commercials on TV and radio for well-known companies such as Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, United Airlines, Pizza Hut, Walt Disney World, Fruit of the Loom, Mastercard, Visa, Verizon, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Busch Gardens, Home Shopping Network, etc. It was quite a costly project but we took a big risk, and hope it will pay off in the long run. We get a constant stream of kudos from kind folks like you though!" - BasicDeidre

Google's Worth vs GM & Ford
I've been meaning to write this for a couple of week - ever since I saw a startling fact boldly stated on my TV screen when the TV show, "60 Minutes" did their broadcast on the "History of Google".
First let me tell you, my career background is in corporate management in the automotive industry working closely (very tightly) with the big three: General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. After 20 years of hard work, I left the corporate world in the year 2000 to pursue my love of design and put in place my ideas of the way a company should be run. So here I am today working hand-in-hand with a terrific and successful company, BasicTemplates.com.
Back to the "Google History" broadcast:
It was a fascinating show and I give a big thumbs up to all 3,000 Google employees but especially the company's co-founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. It is wonderful to know that Google's top dogs do not conduct business like most corporate giants. It's also great to hear that when Google's stocks went public, more than 1000 of Google's employees became instant millionaires.
Double thumbs-up to Google! After hearing stories of corporate corruption (ie. Enron) and knowing first hand that companies like Enron are more plentiful that most people really know (because these companies haven't yet been caught), it is refreshing to see a corporation -finally- NOT acting like most corporatons I've been involved with and making more money than the typical corporation (mis)managed with old world standards.
I've got one thing to say to those corporate people who thought my ideas of a way a corporation "should be" run were too off-the-wall, out-of-the-box, and too new world to be effective and who smirked at me while saying that the Internet was merely a passing "fad" {LOL!}: ...
"What were you thinking? Oh, I guess you weren't."
Now that you know my background, you can then imagine my shock when I heard that Google's worth is fast approaching the worth of General Motors and Ford Motor Company COMBINED. Yes, you read that right --- "COMBINED"! To think that Google has only been around for approximately 10 years and GM and Ford ... well longer than I've been alive.
If you work for a corporation like I did that is being (mis)managed with old world standards and non-ethical business tactics, send your corporate (mis)managers to the URL above. Maybe ... just maybe, they'll "get it". Most likely they won't, but at least you can have the self-satisfaction of knowing you did your best to wake them up.

A Competitor at my Backdoor
Ahhh I see BasicBeca has been busy these days in more ways than one. It appears that I may have a practical joke competitor whose up for a challenge or two, eh? ;) I do love a challenge. Cute joke, BasicBeca, but I'll be at your backdoor when you least expect it. {big grin}
On another note, great job on the redesign. Clean. Fresh and easy on the eyes. Lots of fantastic white space. It took me aback for a sec until I remembered our last conversation. Then I realized the joke was on me. I'm sure our blog readers are glad to see a fresh design style and are happy to see posts are coming at them on a regular basis. I'll be back in the saddle when time permits.
If anyone out there has a good practical joke suggestion, I'm all ears. I love this stuff! One of these days when I get time, I'll write about some of the things I've done, seen and of course had done to me. It's all in fun. You really can mix work with play. ;)

Truth: Full Website Template Packages
We are often asked why we do not offer full website template packages like many of our competitors. Once we explain the logical reasoning to our customers they appreciate the fact that we are honest with them about this completely mythical concept. A concpet that actually causes them more headaches than it does saving them time.
Many people believe that when they shop for a template they need to buy a package that contains 5-10-25+ pages which may already include an about page, FAQ, contact page, order info, etc. This is simply not true at all. Why pay $15-$50-$100+ for a multi-page template package when all you have to do is open the initial template page into your HTML editor just like the template designer did and change the links in the HTML source code to the links you will name your pages. Then do a File > Save As > about.html or whatever other name you want to use. All of your links are already in place on all your pages without manipulating individual pages which is a big time waster. The next step is to add your body content which will mostly likely be different on every page anyway.
Purchasing this type of overpriced, multi-page package can also be a big mistake because it will cause you needless work. And here is why:
If you have other pages you need to add that are not already included or if you need to delete pages you will not be using, you have to add links and/or change links in the HTML source code on all the pages the designer created for you.
Often times these designers stuff these unnecessary pages full of filler text that you have to delete - on each page - prior to adding your own page content. Or worse {yikes!} ... they put instructions inside these pages and YOU have to delete your instructions before you can add your own text! Wow, now that's inconsiderate!
So why are template designers selling these multi-page package? The answer is very simple ... they think it justifies an extra cost. Obviously, it initially sounds better to those who don't know that it isn't necessary and can actually cause much more work and unnecessary stress on the end user than it wuld with a properly designed template.
Why are we telling you this? We obviously would like you to subscribe to a BasicTemplates.com membership where we give you access to over 1000 HTML-CSS Templates with free generic web forms, error pages, etc. that you can copy/paste into the original template. However, after exclusively designing web templates since 1994, long before most template designers online today even had Internet access, we cringe when we see the scams taking place. To us this is simply soooo - not right. It also says a great deal about these designers business ethics and their lack of customer care.
We are certainly not saying that all web template multi-page packages are a scam. The majority of those we have seen certainly are and from the experienced designers' perspective it is completely unnecessary. The type of multi-page template packages you might need (although 90% of the sites would still not need them especially those folks who have an average amount of web design experience) would be those that have *extensive* variation layouts of the main template page. We are merely advising the consumer to be cautious when shopping through the template jungle.
Now that you have been armed with this bit of little known information, we encourage you to shop around for the best price vs. the type of quality you should expect in your site's design. We are confident you will appreciate our sound consumer advice and will be back to shop with us for years to come.

Basically Clueless!
BasicRic still has no idea I changed our BasicBlog's design. He asked me today whether I'm keeping up with the blog posts and I simply answered, "Of course, I told you I would, didn't I?". Let's see how long it takes him to get a clue. In all fairness though, he is extremely busy working on his special project, so comparing "clueless" with "busy" isn't really fair. Lighthouse Website Templates
Wow, it sure seems like it has been awhile since we completed any of our category restructuring and cross-referencing. But it's really only been a couple of weeks. BasicRic and I are back at it again. As promised we are splitting up the old "Profession Specific" category into more meaningful and easier to find categories. You asked, and we delivered. We hope to complete this huge project by the end of next week or the week after at the very latest.
So as we've said many times before: The swap-out graphics cross referencing process and creation of a new category, Lighthouses Web Templates, has been completed.

Free Web Graphics
As a reminder to all of our loyal customers, each week we offer FREE web graphics to anyone who places an order worth $5.00 USD or more. Every Monday our free file download changes, so if you see something you want, make a quick $5.00 USD purchase. >>> Check out this week's FREE Web Graphics Download
I should also mention that our web graphics are unlike any others you may have seen elsewhere. Not only do we create graphics that most webmasters really want and can use. But many of our original graphic designs are "interchangeable" with our templates which makes our designs and membership services innovative and certainly unique. If you see a graphics package you like, our Swap-Out Graphics gallery will also state whether there are specific templates it was designed for. Of course, you can use them with your own designs as well.
If you received a free web graphics download in the past, be sure to search on the Product ID number in our design gallery for information regarding related designs in which it may coordinate.
You get the best of both worlds: effective website designs and optional swap-out graphics to go with them ... and ONLY at BasicTemplates.com!
