What does WYSIWYG Mean?
With such a long acronym it is no wonder that “What does WYSIWYG mean?” is such a commonly asked question. The meaning of WYSIWYG is rather humorous because it stands for “What you see is what you get!”
WYSIWYG is a term used in electronic publishing that refers to editors or an editing software system that provides the user a view on the screen while they create or edit documents that is very accurate to what the design of the pages will look like when they are complete. WYSIWYG is useful when working with css style.
Some examples of true WYSIWYG products are QuarkXpress and Adobe Illustrator. QuarkXpress is layout software that provides support for writing and editing as well as enabling the user to add images such as a table, graphic or picture files.
Adobe Illustrator’s new version of CS2 software is a powerful, time saving tool for converting bitmaps to vector images and can be used to produce internet based images of a reasonable file size that can even be accessed from the web using mobile devices. It is suitable for producing video graphics as well.
A URL that uses a lot of graphics may be slow to load or to show up on a website. Also graphic files generally take a lot of time to download; however, using a design product to optimize file size can eliminate these problems.
The internet is the best source of information on WYSIWYG products and sometimes you can even find free downloads of trial versions of a software or even a template so you can try it out before you decide to start using it. Most people like to try a software product prior to purchasing it.

What is CGI?
CGI, otherwise known as “common gateway interface, is the way in which a web server sends users a list of requests for web pages to an application program and then allows them to receive data from the Internet that has been processed. The data that a user can retrieve, or send to, includes documents, databases, and other programs.
If you want to create your own CGI script you’ll want to learn Perl, which is one of the most popular programming languages for CGI scripts. Since the control of the common gateway interface is dependent on the CGI server you’ll want to learn how to write scripts and read the page text from its source.
You can find CGI scripts to download from many sources on the Internet. There are several advantages to using CGI tools. These advantages include:
- CGI is simple to use and CGI scripts are easy to write once you understand Perl programming code.
- It doesn’t matter what size of data you’re requesting, the common gateway interface is able to handle the request.
- The CGI system has an open standard which allows you to link to any web documents.
- CGI is very stable to use which allows you to focus on other aspects of the program, such as creating secure scripts.
The only two real disadvantages of CGI are that is can be functionally limiting to the task it has been designed for and it can be inefficient ifyou’re experienced with scripting. You’ll want to take advantage of CGI if you’re designing and promoting your business online.

What is eCommerce?
Throughout history there has been “commerce” of one kind or another and the information revolution introduces the question – “What is eCommerce?”
Basically, eCommerce is the process of marketing, shopping, buying, selling and receiving money through the access of technology, resources, tools and software solutions that enable digital processing. What is FTP?
FTP file transfer is a windows Internet program that is used to:
- transfer files from one computer to another
- upload files to another computer
- backup important data
When you use an ftp client for your file downloads you can be sure that you’re using a secure method of file compression to transfer data between servers.
Some of the more popular ftp programs that you can purchase, or ftp free programs, that you can download to use include:
- SmartFTP. The current version of SmartFTP allows you to manage directories easily so that you can transfer entire files.
- CuteFTP. CuteFTP has an easy to use interface that provides you with frequent updates so that you stay current with the latest security features.
- Ipswitch. Many users find Ipswitch the most reliable ftp client to use when they are working with a large network of computers.
- BulletProof FTP. Active ftp transfers are automatically terminated if there is a security issue, and the user is immediately notified.
- FTP Explorer. This ftp service is probably the fastest to learn. The easy to manage directory system lets you organize the files that you want to transfer so that you can keep track of active uploads and downloads.
You’ll find that most web servers have the capability to use secure file transfer. There are many public servers that have files and programs that you’ll want to download for your business purposes. When you use an ftp program you can be confident that you’re transferring these files through a safe and secure process.

Merchant processors are businesses authorized by banks as providers of credit card processing services. To conduct monthly billing or to accept point of sale payments from a cardholder of MasterCard, Visa or another credit card for your products or services through your business or ecommerce website, you will need to be setup with a terminal or other solutions for processing customer payments.
It is important to find and access a good merchant processor that enables simplified financial management of commerce through a network that ensures privacy and security for your customers and doesn’t charge outrageous fees or result in high annual costs. Reviewing their marketing and checking into the specifics of the services and fees will help in finding a provider that isn’t too expensive and provides desirable services.
Sometimes a hosting or web design company will be able to offer options for accepting pay through a secure application and can build a shopping cart that integrates with the payment process.
Things to consider when selecting a merchant processor include monthly and annual rates, the discount rate per debit, the type of cards they accept, whether they offer immediate or express authorization for retail sales, charges for applications, whether they require signing of the receipt or orders by the customer, and how they handle a chargeback or fraud. The reports they provide for the management of your money is also important.
The advantage of using a merchant processor for accepting payments is that you can accept credit cards from your customers which can increase your sales. The disadvantages are that having a merchant account can be expensive, sometimes receipt of payment is delayed, you can be subjected to chargebacks, and there is always potential for fraud.
Sometimes the expense of accepting credit cards can be reduced by using a service such as PayPal that charges a small transaction fee with no monthly or annual fees rather than using a merchant processor.

What is MySQL?
A commonly asked question in regard to programming is, “What is MySQL?”
MySQL is a flexible and reliable database management system which uses SQL (Structured Query Language) to guide, manage and process data in databases. SQL is a preferred language of developers in building databases due to its speed in returns and display of results of content from queries in database applications. It is quick to retrieve code and content from a cell in basic conditions and enables a file or form to load quickly.
MySQL does have some security issues but can be effectively designed to be secure using firewalls and password administration.
MySQL is open source and works well in conjunction with apache, linux, asp and php scripts creating a complex yet simple to use software design that has all the basics needed to begin efficient database management. Coldfusion works via ODBC to connect to MySQL databases.
The developers of MySQL are quality driven and strive to ensure that their product is bug free, easy to use and affordable. The advantages of MySQL over similar web programming languages are its ease of use, affordability, flexibility and speed. It is also known to decrease downtime as well as maintenance, administration and support costs. The disadvantage is vulnerability to certain worms; however, security guidelines have been developed to make MySQL databases more secure. Because of its flexibility, MySQL is more likely to be a long-term database management system which will eliminate the expenses associated with changing proprietary software.
