Using Video and Audio in Web Pages

There are many advantages to using video and audio in web pages; however, care must be taken in choosing solutions that avoid the potential disadvantages.

The use of multimedia features including interactive voice communications, computer based training meeting systems and conferencing tools, teleconferencing, and streaming of music and movie technology, along with online video presentation are becoming popular. In fact with such capabilities, phone support may become outdated.

International delivery of news, content, information events and conferences can be delivered worldwide today through easy to use software, services and integrated resources.

Special systems for education have transformed the industry through the use of technology making it real easy for a family to provide quality higher education opportunities for their family members in a collaborative environment where they can experience and learn without the enormous expense previously incurred for post-secondary education.

Enterprise can easily begin and expand into the global markets today and can accomplish many real-time functions through the use of audio and video on websites, virtually annihilating the geographical limitations formerly presented and depicted on a map. Using a link to enable the download of a text page or other info to computer users desktop and using the latest code and resources for a teleconferencing center, management can easily engage in mobile collaborations and can conduct training sessions and conferences worldwide using the same system they use to promote their products.

The disadvantage of using multimedia on a website is that, if not used properly, there is high potential for the efficiency and the effectiveness of the website to be diminished. However, a professional web developer can control the size of media files and free up space to ensure that large files don’t create a high demand on the system resources to ensure optimal performance.

Ideas: Holiday Web Templates

We wanted to share with you a few ideas on how to use our holiday web templates and graphics. Holiday templates are not just for decorating your business or organization's website. Many people are using our holiday designs to quickly setup a section on their existing website with their family's holiday greeting card and a personal letter sharing their life's events over the past year. That is exactly what a family from St. Petersburg, Florida did this year and to put their visitors' in a more festive mood, they added a bit of background music to the holiday template they purchased from BasicTemplates.com.

Great idea, wouldn't you agree? And it is far less expensive and time consuming than sitting down and addressing Christmas cards and then paying postage to snaaaaail mail them out at the last minute. As more and more people get Internet access in their homes and get email addresses, you can quickly send your family and friends a holiday email including your family's letter URL. Oh sure, you could just email them your family letter, but adding all of the personal touches that a web page can offer is far more intimate and the ideas to include on your page are endless.

We've listed a few ideas here to get you started. Once you start, the ideas will just keep coming!

  1. Add Christmas background music. Go to Google and type in "Christmas midi" and you will find tons of free midis to download to use as your background music.

  2. Add your family's holiday portrait, a photo of your Christmas tree, holiday home decorations, family pets dressed in their Santa hats, photos from the past year's vacation, birthdays, parties, etc.

  3. Add your favorite holiday recipes or new recipes you are trying.

  4. Add your family letter including all of the past year's happenings.

  5. Add a Christmas list for each family member including links to Amazon's wishlist, eBay, etc.

  6. Add important 2006 announcements, family event calendar, photo gallery, etc.

If you wanted to share your personal holiday page with co-workers or friends who might not care to read about your son's latest antics, there is no reason you couldn't create a separate section using the same or even a different holiday web template from BasicTemplates.com.

Remember, all of our Christmas web templates and graphics will be 20% OFF through December. We just added three New Year's templates to this special savings event. So even if you don't have time to start a family holiday greeting section to your existing website this Christmas, you can still get a great price for next year's projects.

For those interested in adding background music to their holiday page, here are some simple instructions:

First, go to Google.com and search for "Christmas midi". You can find thousands of websites who offer free background music. There are several file formats: .mid, .wav and .mp3. The .mid file format is the smallest and will take less time to download for your visitors to hear.

Now copy/paste the following code into your web page where you want the embedded media player displayed:

<embed src="filename.mid" autostart="true" loop="false">

You can change the attributes and values as follows:

The src attribute indicates the file name including the path on you website's server where you have uploaded the file. You can use an absolute path or relative path.

The autostart attribute instructs the sound file's behavior when the page initially loads. If you set this attribute's value to "true", the song file will begin playing automatically as soon as the page loads. If you state "false", the sound file will not start automatically. Your visitor will need to start the sound by clicking the button on the embedded media player.

The loop attribute instructs the sound file how many times to play. If you have this attribute's value set to "true" then it will automatically play over and over. If you have it set to "false" it will play only once and then stop.

The hidden attribute relays to the browser whether it should hide the media player on the web page. If you set this attribute's value to true, your website visitors will not be able to stop the sound unless they close the browser window (or leave your website completely). Keep in mind that not everyone likes background music, some folks may have a slow Internet connection, or may not have the same taste in music as you do. Use the appropriate value for this attribute based on who will be visiting your website.

Happy Holidays everyone! May your holiday season be safe and joyous!

What Does Page Weight and Load Time Mean?

A very commonly asked question is, “What Does Page Weight and Load Time Mean?”

The page weight, or how heavy pages are, has to do with the total number of and size of graphics on a webpage. The use of a high resolution image as content strains required resources more than a small, low resolution image impacting online navigation and slowing down the loading of the index or content pages of a website.

Another factor that impacts load time, the time it takes a page to load, include user loads that are conditions created when traffic on a system is above average. When such conditions exist, access to a service or application can be denied or the ability to view the website can be hindered.

When users are conducting research at such times and they experience difficulty accessing a data file or menu areas on a website, they most frequently leave the website which results in lost traffic.

HTML code in the header and footer and text have little impact on page weights and loading. Graphics and multimedia features are the primary culprits of lost traffic on the internet. If a consumer finds your site in Google and wishes to visit the site, they expect to be able to access your front page quickly.

Following a guide to determine your load time and page weight is the first step to correcting the problem. From there, you can optimize your images and code to decrease load time which in turn will increase traffic due to improved accessibility.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript was developed by Netscape and is used to allow web designers to create web sites that contain dynamic content. JavaScript is a scripting language that is closely related to Java object oriented programming. The source code interacts with HTML, DHTML and XML to develop JavaScripts that are used for a variety of processes.

The advanced technology of JavaScript allows a user to design software applications for any server that supports web browsers. Most domain hosting companies will support any website that uses JavaScript for navigation, cookies, menu selection, and other events such as PHP or CGI programming.

There are many examples and resources available on the Internet that will provide you with updated articles and tips for JavaScript. You’ll find that JavaScript methods are easy to lean and after one tutorial you’ll be ready to develop your own useful scripts.

There are several advantages to using JavaScript. Some of these advantages include:

- JavaScript is fast which means that a code function can run quickly instead of waiting for a response from the server.

- JavaScript provides solid security for a window based environment.

- You can use JavaScript with many other program languages and it can be placed in most web pages regardless of the type of file extension that isused.

- You can use JavaScript within other scripts that have been created in other programming languages such as PHP and Perl.

- Since JavaScript is client side it places less demand on the server.

JavaScript is one tool that you’ll want to use to create dynamic web pages for your business. The more tools that you have available for your web development, the more unique content you can include on your business website.

What is a web page watermark?

A web page watermark is a digital background image in a web page design. Watermarks are useful in preventing others from using copyrighted photos or graphics; however, the main purpose of a web page watermark is aesthetic. Basically, a watermark adds a personalized touch of style.

You can position a watermark as transparent image in the center or body of a web page, on the left, the right, or at the bottom. It doesn’t matter. Watermarks can be created using various size, color and font features. Many times a company will use a lightened version of their logo as a web page watermark and may place it in a box.

Since web page watermarks are gaining in popularity, you can find a lot of free info online about how to create them using various products and tools coupled with HTML code. You may want to search for a URL with a discussion board that has a thread with a description of various tools for creating watermarks. Participating in forum discussions is a great way to learn which options will be most easy for you to use.

The advantage of using a web page watermark is, unlike a fixed background image, the ability to view the background image is not limited by browsers. Cascading style sheets can be used to create the watermark. Even though the browser views are not generally an issue, it is a good idea to view your web page watermark in different browsers to see how it looks.

The main disadvantage is larger images used in a watermark can increase download time.

What is SSL?

A question commonly asked by e-business owners and consumers is, “What is SSL?”

SSL is an encryption protocol, a secure sockets layer, intended to provide solutions for internet security by limiting public access to private communications, data and content transmitted via an internet connection a server or sites.

Using a browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, both of which support SSL authentication, your customers can be free from concern about the security of their information when they order products or services if your network has an SSL digital certificate.

Many consumers learn that if the URL at the top of a web page begins with https, the site is secure and if it begins with http, they can’t trust that their information won’t be open to public access. So, the main advantage of SSL is consumer confidence. It is becoming a standard to check for an SSL certificate. This is especially important when transmitting credit card or social security numbers.

Netscape and Apache both provide a version of SSL and openSSL provides cryptography capabilities. SQL server supports SSL.

The disadvantage of SSL is that with SSL the ISP cache can’t be used so a greater load is placed on a server. Also, some applications may not work properly with SSL and data is only protected during transmittal using SSL so other security features are needed as well to protect source code and the data stored on a server.

For the most part, any website that collects or transmits confidential data needs SSL. When you take security seriously, many legal difficulties can be prevented.
